Reconstruction of Family-Level Phylogenetic Relationships within Demospongiae (Porifera) Using Nuclear Encoded Housekeeping Genes
BACKGROUND Demosponges are challenging for phylogenetic systematics because of their plastic and relatively simple morphologies and many deep divergences between major clades. To improve understanding of the phylogenetic relationships within Demospongiae, we sequenced and analyzed seven nuclear housekeeping genes involved in a variety of cellular functions from a diverse group of sponges. MET...
متن کاملHousekeeping genes for phylogenetic analysis of eutherian relationships.
The molecular relationship of placental mammals has attracted great interest in recent years. However, 2 crucial and conflicting hypotheses remain, one with respect to the position of the root of the eutherian tree and the other the relationship between the orders Rodentia, Lagomorpha (rabbits, hares), and Primates. Although most mitochondrial (mt) analyses have suggested that rodents have a ba...
متن کاملPhylogenetic analysis of the order Halichondrida (Porifera, Demospongiae), using 3b-hydroxysterols as chemical characters
To analyze and extract phylogenetic information from chemical characters, the 3b-hydroxysterol composition of 12 sponge species of various families of the Poriferan order Halichondrida (sensu lato), was determined. The current definition of the order is ambiguous, and its classification remains in a state of flux and hence, further chemical characters may aid in stabilizing it. Axinella corruga...
متن کاملPhylogenetic relationships within mammalian order Carnivora indicated by sequences of two nuclear DNA genes.
Phylogenetic relationships among 37 living species of order Carnivora spanning a relatively broad range of divergence times and taxonomic levels were examined using nuclear sequence data from exon 1 of the IRBP gene (approximately 1.3 kb) and first intron of the TTR gene (approximately 1 kb). These data were used to analyze carnivoran phylogeny at the family and generic level as well as the int...
متن کاملTwo new species of the family Niphatidae van Soest, 1980 from Northeastern Brazil (Haplosclerida: Demospongiae: Porifera).
This paper deals with niphatid sponges from the coast of the Bahia State, northeastern coast of the Brazilian shelf (southwestern Atlantic). Two new species are described, Amphimedon estelae sp. nov. and Niphates luizae sp. nov. A taxonomic study of those samples is given, including description and illustrations. Both species were compared with their congeners present in the Atlantic Ocean.
